I need help! I am looking for a good used tractor. I recently found an L3450 with an L650 loader. It also has GST, 480 hrs, Ag tires, 6' bush hog, post hole digger, and blade. It looks great and has been kept in a shead since he bought it new in 1994. I am looking for information on the 3450 and its estimated price. Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks!

TZ

I’m not sure how much good my 3-year old Canadian prices on my Ford 1710/loader would do you.

One thing I'd say is not to cut a budget too slim when getting a used tractor. They almost have a hidden cost for the 'Dread Previous Owner' (Roger's term). My DPO factor cost about $1500 CAN, which isn't terrible. However, definitely plan to fix something. My main problem was that the 4wd linkage broke inside the cases. I could have spotted the problem, since the control lever was broken off it's collar and welded. Looking for welds or cracks can spot many problems. But, I needed the tractor THEN and would have bought it even if I had noticed the weld. Many people probably find themselves in similar circumstances.

A diesel should start easily after a short pre-heat and shouldn't smoke much after a warm up. A warmed up diesel puff a bit of gray smoke on acceleration but anything more usually means repairs are needed.

The tractor comes with a rotary cutter and an auger. Either can be hard on the PTO drive, so I'd want to check the PTO to see if engages and disengages smoothly. If it's a live pto (with a 2-stage clutch--a very good feature) I'd want to see that the clutch feels smooth and does in fact turn pto power on and off. Since there is fair potential for big rotary cutters to blow pto clutches, I'd want to see it work under load. If the rotary cutter is big for the tractor you might wonder how hard the tractor has been run.

Other than that, I'd just run the 3ph and loader through their paces under some load and also look for hydraulic oil leaks.

I've ran across something called 'machinery link' (http://www.machinerylink.com/resources/uevg/) several times recently. I know nothing about the site, but apparently used tractor values can be looked up in a data base. ....
